48:13
historic events in the life of this city
48:19
I understand that when the cathedral was constructed constructed
48:25
it was considered by some too far on the outskirts of the city
48:30
even earning the nickname San Michaels in the fields
48:36
today its setting is even more striking being surrounded by institutions of Commerce
48:45
industry and next to Saint Michael's Hospital
48:50
as a compelling reminder of the place of God within society and of Humanity's
48:57
need for salvation in this context
49:04
we must express our heartfelt gratitude to Cardinal Collins for his leadership

51:37
as you noted in your beautiful letter to the people of archdise of Toronto at the

51:48
Time considering the men's responsibility that comes with that office

1:09:32
people that you weary My God also therefore
1:09:38
the Lord himself will give you a sign look the young woman is with child and shall

second reading according to the book of Hebrews it is impossible for the blood of bulls
1:13:18
and goats to take away sins consequently when Christ came into the world he said
1:13:25
sacrifices and offerings you have not desired but a body you have prepared for me
1:13:30
in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure
1:13:36
then I said as it is written of me in the scroll of the book
1:13:41
see God I have come to do your Will O God when Christ said
1:13:46
you have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings
1:13:52
and burnt offerings and sin offerings these are offered according to the law
1:13:58
then he then he added see I have come to do your will
1:14:04
he abolishes the first in order to establish the second and it is by God's will that we have

1:16:28
[Music]
1:16:49
the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth
1:16:58
to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph of the House of David
1:17:06
the virgin's name was Mary and he came to her and said
1:17:14
Hill full of grace the Lord is with you
1:17:19
but she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this
1:17:27
might be the angel said to her do not be afraid Mary for you have found
1:17:35
favor with God and now you will conceive in your womb
1:17:43
and bear us on and you will name him Jesus
1:17:49
he will be great and will be called a son of the most high
1:17:56
and the Lord God will give to him the Throne of his father David
1:18:03
he will reign over the house of Jacob forever hand of his kingdom there will be no end
1:18:11
Mary said to the angel how can this be since I am a virgin
1:18:19
the angel Saturn the holy spirit will come upon you
1:18:26
and the power of the most high will overshadow you
1:18:32
therefore the child to be born will be holy he will be called Son of God
1:18:40
and now your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived us on
1:18:49
and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren
1:18:55
for nothing will be impossible with God then Mary said
1:19:02
here am I the servant of the Lord let it be done into let it be done to me
1:19:10
according to your word then the Angels departed from her

1:30:04
responses to the loving Lord Of Our Lives she is a gift
1:30:10
that the Lord offers to us she must be known loved welcomed and
1:30:16
served she makes Jesus real and personal to us through the action of the Holy Spirit
1:30:25
the Annunciation as the church fathers remind us can be a daily experience
1:30:32
as with and like Mary we open our hearts we open our relationships we open our
1:30:40
families and our communities so that Christ is born Anew therein and fills us
1:30:47
with the blessedness and joys of the Kingdom our greatest claim is that we are
1:30:54
Servants of the Lord and no one better than the mother is
1:30:59
able to teach us this important lesson I am very grateful for the service given
1:31:07
by those who in addition to the auxiliary Bishops are a Diocesan priest
1:31:13
first and closest collaborators the priests
1:31:19
I Look to them to you here present and those who could not make it today
1:31:24
as co-workers and supporters our sons and brothers as friends and fellow
1:31:33
missionary disciples co-responsible for the mission of evangelization
1:31:40
I'm thankful for the gift of the calling to the priesthood of Jesus Christ
1:31:45
I'm grateful for the priests of this Archdiocese who selflessly and generously give their
1:31:53
lives for the life of their communities
1:32:00
ordained as a priest over 26 years ago I often look back I'm so grateful for
1:32:07
the fine examples of the missionary Priests of my own home Parish
1:32:13
they were palpable presence of Christ to us they mediated the grace which brings
1:32:19
Jesus to life within us enabling us to live a supernatural life
1:32:25
of Holiness all the while with both feet on the ground serving others with
1:32:30
compassion and generosity the world needs priests because the
1:32:37
world needs Christ priests speak to us of Jesus
1:32:44
give us Jesus Love Like Jesus
1:32:49
show us Jesus and bring through the ministry of the word and Sacrament his kingdom to life
1:32:56
in our lives one of the aspects I loved most in my
1:33:02
Ministry has been teaching at the different levels of the academic structures High School Seminary and
1:33:09
University I especially enjoyed lecturing patristics and petrology
1:33:16
one of the most beautiful inspiring passage comes to us from Saint Ignatius of Antioch now he
1:33:23
was the second Bishop of Antioch was arrested condemned to death and transported to Rome to be thrown to
1:33:31
the wild beasts in the arena and martyrd in the year 107. in the course of his journey to Rome he
1:33:38
wrote seven letters to various churches on a variety of topics including the organization of the church
1:33:45
in his letter to the Christians in in Ephesus he spoke specifically about the need for
1:33:53
Unity and harmony and these are themes very close to my
1:33:58
heart he wrote and I quote I'm taking the opportunity to urge you
1:34:05
to be United in Conformity with the mind of God
1:34:11
for Jesus Christ Our Life without whom we cannot live
1:34:16
is the mind of the father just as the Bishops appointed over the
1:34:23
whole world are in Conformity with the mind of Jesus Christ it is fitting therefore that you should
1:34:31
be in agreement with the mind of the bishop as in fact you are your excellent presbyters who are
1:34:38
accredited to God are as suited to the bishop as strings
1:34:44
to a harp so that your Harmony of mind and heart
1:34:49
in your Harmony of mind and heart the song you sing is Jesus Christ
1:34:56
every one of you should form a choir so that in harmony of sound and through
1:35:02
the harmony of hearts and in unity taking the note from God
1:35:07
you may sing with one Voice through Jesus Christ to the father
1:35:13
if you do this he will listen to you and see from your good works that you
1:35:19
are members of his son it is then an advantage to you to live
1:35:25
in perfect Unity so that all at all times you may share
1:35:30
in God it's a beautiful image strings on the heart playing and singing
1:35:37
In Harmony It's a Wonderful ideal to pursue together in tandem
1:35:43
I'd like to Express gratitude to the permanent deacons and their wives the entire the akonal community thank
1:35:51
you for your service and dedication to the life of the church and for witnessing to Christ the servant in your
1:35:58
work with the needy and the vulnerable through your passional and liturgical Ministry social and charitable works you
1:36:06
share in Christ's Mission and Grace in a very special way and there's a delightful little sentence
1:36:13
again of saying Ignatius of Antioch in one of his letters he said let everyone Revere the deacons as Jesus
1:36:20
Christ the bishop has the image of the father and the presbyters as the center of God
1:36:28
and assembly of the Apostles for without then one cannot speak of the
1:36:34
church consecrated Life as We Know is a
1:36:40
tremendous gift to the church and to The Wider Society I'm very pleased to know of the many
1:36:47
committed women and men of consecrated life who through their prophetic
1:36:52
witnessing contribute enormously to building up the body of Christ in this
1:36:57
archdiocese and have for many many years through the Living God of the religious
1:37:02
vows they witness us to us the beauty of belonging entirely to the Lord
1:37:09
of living for him and of serving him through the manifold apostolates they
1:37:16
have established and in which their charisms continue to inspire new generations
1:37:25
king of new generations allow me to speak to and about
1:37:30
young people again in Ministry I thoroughly loved
1:37:35
during my years and pastoral parochial Ministry
1:37:40
the youths are a gift to us their gift to our families to our
1:37:47
communities of faith into the wider Society youth brings strength idealism and hope
1:37:54
for the future they need to be loved and accompanied
1:38:00
listen to and cherished welcomed and witnessed to and we need to give them
1:38:06
our Attention our time our means and our wisdom the Holy Father wrote in his exhortation
1:38:13
Christos keep following your hopes and dreams
1:38:19
but be careful about what Temptation can that can hold us back it is anxiety
1:38:25
anxiety can work against us by make by making us give up whatever we do not see
1:38:31
instant results our best dreams are only attained through hope patience
1:38:38
and commitment and not in haste at the same time we should not be
1:38:43
hesitant we're afraid to take chances and make mistakes
1:38:49
I remember long ago when I was 18 years old and had just applied to enter the
1:38:56
seminary in Montreal had been an altar server for many years in my home Parish or a
1:39:03
leader consolata our Parish was staffed by many dedicated pastors of souls Dynamic missionaries
1:39:12
I remember especially the energy the creativity and the generosity of our pastor back then father
1:39:18
adminergildo crespi another loving priest was father Luigi
1:39:24
test now God Rest the soul one day when we were about to begin mass
1:39:30
at the Sacristy door he stopped me and he said to me
1:39:36
I heard that you asked went to the Seminary and to become a priest this is very good and I am proud of you
1:39:49
there's nothing more beautiful than to give your youth to the Lord
1:39:56
these words have remained deep inside of me and have never left my heart
1:40:02
and Italian I can still hear him saying
1:40:14
so I appealed to the young people here this morning and throughout the Archdiocese
1:40:19
do not be afraid of the world do not be afraid to give your life in
1:40:25
service to others do not be afraid to Dream Big Dreams to want to transform
1:40:31
the world do not be afraid to commit to Jesus and to his gospel
1:40:37
do not be afraid to love the church and to be an integral part of her
1:40:42
witnessing and to live a life of heroic virtue do not be afraid to give your
1:40:49
youth to the Lord stay close to your Parish Church
1:40:55
and to the movements and associations in the church get involved in the realities of school
1:41:02
of neighborhood and social needs share your talents discover your
1:41:09
giftedness ask the Lord to reveal to you his will for your life
1:41:15
your authentic vocation reach out to others Let Jesus into your heart and allow
1:41:23
mother Mary to take you by the hand
1:41:30
whenever a new bishop arrives in the diocese that he is called to lead and
1:41:36
serve there are no doubts many questions who is he
1:41:42
where does he come from what's the story what makes him tick
1:41:48
you can find some answers to these questions in the program provided
1:41:54
my biography is all there as I like to put it one of the best obituaries I've
1:41:59
ever had the pleasure of reading in my message the people of God in
1:42:05
Toronto at the time of my appointment I shared a little about myself and my leadership I spoke about being a son of
1:42:12
Italian immigrants from the old country where respect sacrifice
1:42:18
hard work Family Faith and taking care of one another
1:42:24
were and remain vital now we know that Bishop Michael power
1:42:31
buried here Below on the Crypt was the first Bishop of Toronto
1:42:36
and that he came from the Archdiocese of Montreal where he had been serving as Baker General
1:42:43
sounds and feels very familiar sometimes I stop and ask myself how he
1:42:50
must have felt Toronto was quite different back then with thousands of Catholics mainly of
1:42:56
Irish immigrants the spiritual and Social Challenges were
1:43:02
many back then as they are now I pray and I ask you all to pray for me
1:43:10
that I will serve with the same courage and wisdom with his committed pastual
1:43:16
Zeal and love for the people and to serve until death with Fidelity with
1:43:23
heart and generosity with respect to my vision for the
1:43:30
Archdiocese I will take the necessary time to come to know the priests the deacons the
1:43:37
religious and the faithful of our local church and the other key players and the life of the larger Community civil and
1:43:44
otherwise I will listen to you from you I would like to learn about our
1:43:49
Community of Faith about its history its Rich diversity its changing Trends and
1:43:56
the challenges before us then together we shall discern the signs of the times
1:44:02
I appreciate even more than many wonderful Ministries that already exist
1:44:07
and are thriving and wish to welcome together the great the
1:44:13
grace-filled opportunities which lie before us it is only then together
1:44:18
we can set forth a vision of which where we would like to go as Church rooted in
1:44:24
sacred scripture and sacred tradition working out of the deposit of faith
1:44:30
and in an openness to the newness and the surprises that the holy spirit will show us and provide for us as missionary
1:44:38
disciples and as we reach out to all peoples and our communities at the peripheries and
1:44:45
at the center we seek to become a friend a neighbor a
1:44:50
brother and a sister to all and as we sang in the entrance hymn
1:44:55
for we can only Wonder at every gift you send at blessings without number and mercies
1:45:02
Without End there are however some aspects of our
1:45:08
witnessing that are known and which will never change for example our care for the poor and
1:45:16
the marginalized our Outreach to the neglected and the Forgotten our welcoming of migrants
1:45:24
displaced persons and refugees our defense of human life at its in his
1:45:30
dignity at all of its stages protecting and promoting the sacredness
1:45:35
of holy matrimony of the family the gift of Catholic Education to be
1:45:40
encouraged the institutions of Health Care and Social Services to be faster than
1:45:46
recognized for the outstanding Works of Mercy are common and collaborative Endeavors
1:45:53
with persons of different Faith traditions in building a more fraternal and just Society all the while
1:46:00
addressing the systemic and structural deficiencies at hand our efforts at healing a reconciliation
1:46:06
with the indigenous persons who have suffered much our protection of minors invulnerable
1:46:13
adults and the preventing of all forms of abuse
1:46:18
our care for our common home our engagement and the social networks
1:46:24
of our society all of this is part of our common calling
1:46:29
and how vital it is to come together to work in tandem so that even in our Beloved Country men and women of Faith
1:46:37
are able to worship and to be respected through policies and laws that seriously
1:46:43
and conscientiously honor the makeup of our society that is made up of many people of faith and cultural traditions
1:46:53
furthermore how attentive we must be in and remain in avoiding harmful and
1:47:02
divisive ideologies that corrode the moral and spiritual fabric of Our Lives
1:47:09
we know and we weep for the violence that is taking place in
1:47:14
different parts of the world in Ukraine and in the countries and continents we
1:47:20
hear and we are heartbroken at the knowledge of how basic human rights and freedoms in Primus religious freedom are
1:47:28
being trampled upon in no way can we remain silent before
1:47:33
such injustices and the different forms of persecution we see
1:47:39
we must stand strong we must love the world
1:47:45
for God so loved the world that he sent his only son to save it
1:47:50
but we must not kneel before it a Jacques Maritime prophetically wrote
1:47:56
that decades ago if we want to be guided by the Holy
1:48:01
Spirit as we read in the Acts of the Apostles regarding the early church
1:48:07
we must at all costs remember remain humble and meek learning from our Lord
1:48:14
and our lady it is only in emptying ourselves the
1:48:19
gospel kenosis that we will be led and animated by Jesus's spirit
1:48:25
and making a lasting lasting contribution to the church into the world arrogance and pride
1:48:33
self-sufficiency spiritual worldliness and self-reference our vices and
1:48:39
attitudes that we are destructive and divisive and always a Temptation we need
1:48:45
to reject them vehemently and remain in an attitude of self of facing humility
1:48:54
we are called and empowered to bring people together to bring people together
1:49:00
to God and God to them to lift people up
1:49:06
to provide and Foster opportunities of Grace so they may receive and shine with the
1:49:12
Bright Light of Christ but not just shine we are to Enlighten our surroundings and
1:49:20
the lives of those around them there's a beautiful phrase of the angelical Doctor Thomas Aquinas and his
1:49:28
monumentiologica he says
1:49:35
that is it is better to Bright to enlightened
1:49:40
than merely to shine we have not we have received the gift of
1:49:45
faith and we carry within us the Light of Christ not to be kept hidden under a
1:49:51
bushel we must not merely shine but rather seek to Enlighten the lives of others
1:49:58
with humility we do this or rather we allow the spirit in US
1:50:04
to illumine persons and communities through us
1:50:09
the challenges before us are many during his recent
1:50:14
pilgrimage of penance to Canada at the beautiful cathedral of Notre Dame's Quebec in Quebec City during
1:50:21
evening prayer Pope Francis highlighted three pointed challenges in in
1:50:26
proclaiming Jesus Christ today one to make Jesus known
1:50:33
to to witness and three fraternity I hope that we will be able as a church
1:50:41
Community to engage with and unpack together these insights in building our
1:50:47
future since my ordination to the Episcopal sea
1:50:53
every day I re-read the nine promises that a
1:50:59
bishop makes during the ride of consecration by which Sacrament the holy orders he
1:51:04
becomes a success of the Apostles their daily reminder of who I am or rather
1:51:10
rather to whom I have committed my life and how I am to live one of these nine
1:51:15
promises in part reads do you resolve to guide the holy people
1:51:22
of God in the way of salvation as a devoted father
1:51:28
this hits home for me since the marital nuptial symbolism of the relationship
1:51:35
between a bishop and the diocese is very meaningful and Powerful in fact one of
1:51:42
the symbols which is given to a newly ordained Bishop is a ring it's my wedding band
1:51:48
it signifies a covenantal bond a true marriage it speaks the Fidelity and to
1:51:55
selflessness self-sacrifice unconditional love fruitfulness
1:52:02
and long lifelong commitment it's a daily reminder that I am wedded
1:52:08
to the church my bride this archdiocese in particular
1:52:13
and that I am to give my life for her as a loyal and committed husband
1:52:19
as a devoted father as the promise goes there is a rich symbolism
1:52:27
picking up from one American prelitz astute observation of course my
1:52:32
appointment Toronto is an arranged marriage and Pope Francis is the wise Matchmaker
1:52:41
now what arranged marriages the expectation of course is that in due
1:52:46
time the spouses get to know each other and come to love one another now given that I'm 51 years old and that
1:52:53
Bishops normally retired the I at the age of 75. we've got about a quarter of
1:52:59
a century to get to know each other and to fall in love
1:53:05
as an all successful marriages commitment patience forgiveness and
1:53:10
sacrifice will be required it's a Covenant of Love A Fidelity Mark
1:53:16
bind founded upon the grace of Jesus Christ Our Lives are interwoven by
1:53:22
Divine Providence the Lord guides the events that make up our Salvation history personally and in
1:53:29
community I trust and firmly believe that the Lord will not let us down
1:53:36
and he will generously pour out his love into our hearts so that we may love one another
1:53:42
and all people with the life-giving unconditional fruitful creative love of Jesus
1:53:49
know of my commitment to you for now Toronto is my new home and you
1:53:55
are my family now we must address the proverbial
1:54:02
elephant in the room the leaves and the Habs [Applause]
1:54:09
well in keeping with the symbolism of marriage I'm told that the ability to
1:54:16
compromise is essential for a lasting marriage however I think we're going to probably
1:54:22
need some marriage counseling for this one
1:54:27
in conclusion as we make our journey together
1:54:33
be assured of my prayers and my closeness as we Proclaim together the Gospel of
1:54:39
Jesus Christ and are active and our pastual care and our creative Outreach
1:54:46
the Lord will continue to be our strength and we will know Holiness of life and
1:54:52
greatness of soul it is a Holiness that can only come from reclining like his beloved disciple upon
1:55:01
the Christ's Eucharistic and Sacred Heart
1:55:07
Eucharistic adoration will allow Christ to gradually transform
1:55:12
our hearts so that we may be ready to receive the wisdom the strength so as to
1:55:19
spend our lives in service to God through service to others
1:55:24
it is the way of Christ brothers and sisters let us be one in
1:55:30
beseeching the maternal intercession of Mary our Blessed Mother
1:55:35
May her example of Charity of openness of trust of faithfulness be our strength
1:55:44
our light and our guide and invoking the intercession of the powerful patron saint of archdiocese
1:55:51
Saint Michael the Archangel maybe we United in faith and Ministry
1:55:57
truly strive to become one heart and one soul and resisting all divisions
1:56:04
celebrate the Eucharistic sacrifice together as a community of Believers and
1:56:10
as a family in doing so always and everywhere celebrating
1:56:16
echoing Mary's Fiat with her steadfast Fidelity and humility we call down upon
1:56:23
us the powerful and Abundant Blessings of almighty God
1:56:29
I conclude with this beautiful poetic and challenging Sentiments of Pope Saint
1:56:36
Paul VI they resonate with me and I hope they resonate with you as well
1:56:45
we will love those who are near and those who are far from us
1:56:51
we will love our country and that of others we will love our friends
1:56:58
we will love our enemies we will love all social classes but
1:57:04
especially those most in need of help of assistance and advancement
1:57:10
we will love The Young and the old the poor and the sick
1:57:16
we will love those who mock us those who scorn us those who oppose us
1:57:23
and who persecute us we will love those who deserve and we
1:57:29
will love those who do not deserve to be loved we will love our adversaries
1:57:37
we will want no one to be our enemy we will love our times our civilizations
1:57:43
our Technologies our Arts our Sports our world
1:57:48
we will love striving to understand to have compassion to esteem to serve
1:57:56
and to suffer we will love with the heart of Christ
1:58:03
amen and God bless you [Applause]
1:58:23
let us stand us together we profess our faith
1:58:28
being at the Feast of the Annunciation at the words
1:58:33
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate the Virgin Mary became land we will take a few moments to kneel in silence
1:58:41
I believe in one God the Father Almighty maker of heaven and Earth of all things
1:58:47
visible and invisible I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ the only begotten Son
1:58:53
of God born of the father before all ages God from God light from light true
1:59:00
God from true God begotten not me for his potential with the father through
1:59:06
him all things remain for us men of our Salvation he came down from heaven and
1:59:12
by the Holy Spirit was incarnate that the Virgin Mary and became
1:59:43
for our sake he was crucified then the Pontius Pilate he suffered them and was
1:59:48
buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and the Sea of the
1:59:55
right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no
2:00:02
end I believe in the Holy Spirit the Lord The Giver of Life who proceeds in
2:00:07
the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken to the prophets
2:00:14
I believe in one Holy Catholic Apostolic church I confess one baptism for the
2:00:21
Forgiveness of sins
2:00:28
trusting in God's infinite mercy and confident of his love we offer our
2:00:34
petitions in the Name of Christ Our Lord and brother

[Music] a year ago today the Holy Father
2:06:13
consecrated Russia Ukraine along with the church in the entire world to the
2:06:19
Immaculate Heart of Mary he had invited all communities to join him in this act of solemn entrustment of
2:06:26
the intercession of the mother of God just a few days ago on the Wednesday
2:06:31
General audience Pope Francis recalled the act of
2:06:37
consecration which he had presided a year ago in Union with all the Bishops of the world
2:06:42
likewise on Wednesday he invited every believer and community
2:06:48
to renew annually every 25th of March the act of consecration so that as he
2:06:56
stated she who is Mother May preserve us all in unity and peace
2:07:04
and so in virtue of this invitation and as Chief Shepherd of this portion of the people of God entrusted to my pastoral
2:07:12
care I solemnly consecrate this Archdiocese its people and its

2:51:23
Eternal Joy through Christ Our Lord
2:51:28
please receive it
2:52:00
may share Friday sir the secretary
2:52:09
Monsignor Leo it is indeed a time of great joy as we
2:52:16
receive our new Shepherd as he comes to be the Archbishop of Toronto and to begin his ministry a Ministry which I
2:52:23
have shared for the last 16 years and it is indeed a joyful Ministry
2:52:29
because of the great vibrancy and the love which is found in this Archdiocese
2:52:35
I've had the privilege over the last few weeks of introducing Archbishop Leo to the
2:52:41
various Ministries to various people involved in the service of the Lord God here in this diocese it is diverse it is
2:52:49
a marvelous the great inspiration and edification and over the many years that I have
2:52:55
known Archbishop Leo from the days especially when he was the General Secretary of the Canadian Bishops I've
2:53:01
always been edified by his Devotion to the Lord and it is indeed with great joy in my heart that I am able to see him
2:53:09
begin this marvelous ministry as Archbishop of Toronto
2:53:16
anyone who is the Archbishop of Toronto will frequently have good people who care for him say it must be a terrible
2:53:23
burden being Archbishop of Toronto the the weight that weighs upon your shoulders and indeed there are times
2:53:31
there are burdens and challenges uh that is certainly true for we are in a world
2:53:36
which is not yet the Heavenly City Jerusalem it too often seems too much
2:53:41
more like Babylon the great than the Heavenly City we are passing through we're Homeward
2:53:47
Bound but we're not there yet and I think it's always good children on a long journey say are we there yet well
2:53:54
no we're not there yet we're on our way and as we do so we we go through the
2:53:59
valley of the shadow of death we go through this Valley of Tears but we do so With a Song in our hearts because
2:54:05
we're headed home to the Heavenly City Jerusalem and we know that every step of the way as we serve the Lord we are
2:54:13
surrounded by God's grace and that is what gives Joy to the heart of the the
2:54:19
Archbishop of Toronto to be able to go around throughout this Sarge diocese and to see The Marvelous
2:54:27
works of God's grace to see it abundantly around us in the midst of of darkness and heaven knows we have
2:54:35
many things in this world in our country particularly where they're great evils that need to be confronted and they are
2:54:41
worldly evils but they're also evils that reflect the powers and principalities that are Beyond this
2:54:47
world and we need to be aware of that and yet in the midst of it all the Lord is with us every step of the way serve
2:54:55
the Lord with gladness come before him singing for Joy not out of a naivete but
2:55:01
out of an awareness that despite the cares and troubles that burden Us in this world the grace of God triumphs
2:55:08
over all things and so we are confident in his grace and that is what what gives Joy to the
2:55:14
mission of being Archbishop of Toronto and I'm I'm delighted to be able to welcome on this day Archbishop Leo as he
2:55:21
begins this this great Mission within the church in the service of the Lord in
2:55:27
this archdiocese and Beyond in doing this we rely always on the
2:55:32
grace of God and also of course on our blessed mother who shows us the way to do what the Lord tells us to always be
2:55:39
obedient Servants of the Lord be it done unto me according to your word we look to our Heavenly Patron Saint
2:55:46
Michael in the great battles that confront us we are happy Warriors in the
2:55:51
battle for good against evil and we do so under the patronage and with the defense and the strength of of Saint
2:55:58
Michael and we look to the people who have given us a great example
2:56:04
when Archbishop Leo arrived with a very short time I took him down to the tomb
2:56:10
of Michael power down below the sanctuary here we since spent some time in prayer there
2:56:16
Michael power was a priest of the Archdiocese of Montreal responsible for the English sector of that diocese so
2:56:24
many many years ago and so now his successor who has has been in that
2:56:29
mission and now is in the same Mission which Michael power undertook when he became our very first Bishop
2:56:35
Michael power was a man of great self-sacrificing love cared for the needy who cared for the
2:56:42
refugees who came to the shores of Lake Ontario so very many years ago in that terrible summer of 1847 and who gave his
2:56:50
life for the flock and so he's a great example that's why everything around here is named after Saint Michael not only Michael the
2:56:58
Archangel but the great and holy and saintly Michael power our first Bishop
2:57:03
and as Archbishop the burdens are lightened and the joy is made complete as well
2:57:11
because of the great love of all of those who serve the Lord in this world
2:57:18
in this diocese they give themselves to the Lord this is a line in the old marriage right
2:57:24
that said you will face many troubles in life but love will make them bearable and
2:57:30
true love will make them a joy and I can say to anyone who undertakes the mission of Archbishop of Toronto you
2:57:37
face many troubles and cares and battles and things of that nature but love will make them bearable and
2:57:43
true love will make them a joy not only the love and the Heart of the Archbishop but in all those who serve here I think
2:57:50
of the Bishops of the priest the faithful self-sacrifice and constantly serving the people
2:57:55
I think of the deacons of the religious of the seminarians of all the lay people of this diocese
2:58:02
to be Archbishop of Toronto is to experience constant edification and the love in the hearts of all the
2:58:09
people who serve here who serve so Faithfully for which I know I am so
2:58:14
grateful after 16 years as Bishop here I know with each passing day Archbishop
2:58:21
Leia will also be filled with deep gratitude to have the privilege of being able to be Archbishop of Toronto
2:58:28
surrounded by so many vibrant vital loving Disciples of the Lord Jesus
2:58:36
when I was a little boy I learned the prayer which I still say angel of God my
2:58:42
guardian dear to whom God's love commits me here ever this day be at my side to
2:58:47
light to guard to rule and guide amen what do you think of the Guardian Angels but I think particularly we think of
2:58:54
Saint Michael the Archangel our great patron of this archdiocese may he always
2:59:00
be near in the heart and the life of our new Shepherd to light to guard to rule and guide amen
2:59:09
foreign
2:59:35

2:59:59
[Music]
3:00:07
so before the final blessing an apology and a gratitude first of all
3:00:12
I'm sorry for the length of the homily and I promise it won't always be that long
3:00:19
and secondly I want to say how grateful I am not only to his eminence
3:00:24
and that's a lot of gratitude for him but since I got here the competency the goodness the kindness
3:00:31
of the staff Personnel here at the Cathedral at the residents the and at the pastual center
3:00:37
has been outstanding the logistics can you just imagine the liturgical
3:00:42
Communications everything to bring this together has been wonderful I want to thank them very much from the bottom of
3:00:49
my heart
3:01:00
and then did you hear the singing absolutely phenomenal choir here saying
3:01:06
Michael thank you fabulous
3:01:14
every Sunday 12 o'clock if you're in the neighborhood please come to the mass they'll be singing
3:01:21
the Lord be with you blessed be the name of the Lord
3:01:27
our health is in the name of the Lord May almighty God bless you the father
3:01:33
and the son and the holy spirit amen go forth the masses ended thanks
3:01:41
Saint Michael the Archangel defend Us in battle be our protection against the
3:01:46
wickedness and snares of the devil may God with you can we humbly pray and do
3:01:52
thou Prince of the Heavenly Host by the power of God thrust into hell Satan and
3:01:58
all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the rule of Souls
